Dear Parents, February
2014
Our 5th Unit of Inquiry is
titled ‘Organizations’ under the
transdisciplinary theme of “How We Organize
Ourselves”. In this unit, students will research the role and impact of
non-profit and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO). A non-profit organization
uses an increase of money to achieve its business goals rather than using the
money for a profit. An NGO operates with social aims to help people and its
business is independent from a government.
Students will investigate the
different types of actions taken in non-profits and NGOs, such as volunteerism
and development. They will listen to multiple perspectives of the concept of
development and what that means to various people and organizations. Additionally,
they will recognize the role of volunteers in different capacities and examine the different types of actions taken by people
to seek solutions to the problems. Students will practice their
decision-making skills from Unit 2’s Changes
in Us and analyze the impact of nonprofit organizations
on the decision-making ability of people.
Students
will have an opportunity to take a field trip to visit an NGO, as well as
listen to guest speakers talk about the role of organizations in governance and civil
society.
The students will also have many opportunities to continue to develop
transdisciplinary skills. Further
